How do you get started
with your Podcast?
By Lisa Simpson
Podcasting is simply distributing
audio content using RSS feeds. The process is
really very simple, and by making
audio
content available using RSS, podcasters give
listeners more control over what they listen to
and when. Also, many podcasts are available for
syndication, which increases a broadcaster’s
exposure.
The basic requirements to get
started with podcasting are a computer, software
(like FeedForAll, RSSRadio,
Primetime Podcast Receiver and many more)
that allows you to create podcasting and
Internet connection, to upload your podcasts to
web and share them with other users. If you want
to take your podcast with you on your trip to
supermarket, you will need an iPod or any other
MP3 player, where you can store your podcast.
To begin, download and install
podcasting
software
onto your computer (PC or Mac). Every
application for creating podcasts is different,
but normally there are simple directions to
"add" or "subscribe to" a podcast feed (usually
just as simple as copying and pasting the
podcast URL, found in the icon, from the list
above into your podcasting application). Apple’s
iTunes, starting from version 4.9 and
higher, the process for subscribing to podcasts
or downloading single podcast files is quite
simple.
Once you have subscribed to a podcast, the next
time you "Check for New Podcasts", an
MP3 of your
selected program will be on your computer, and
if you're set up for it, it will be on your
iPod as well. Now that you can find
thousands of podcasts all over the internet, one
of the best places is to go to Apple’s homepage
and check out
iTunes.
Apple’s
iTunes can
be installed on Windows PC’s or MAC’s.
When you open
iTunes
application, you will see button saying
(podcasts), press the button, and you’ll get
hundreds of podcasts to subscribe to, they are
all in one place, and you will have to decide
what to download. Allow the iTunes Store to help
you. Browse podcasts in hundreds of categories —
from arts and entertainment to politics to
comedy. All podcasts are with descriptive
summaries, ratings and reviews, and the podcast
equivalent of album art.
Once you find a podcast that you are interested
in, just listen first, and then decide whether
to subscribe or not. If you want, you can get
podcasts, served fresh daily, it’s very simple,
find the podcasts you want, subscribe free, and
that’s it! With the click of a button, you will
get the most recent podcast of your choice,
automatically delivered straight to your iTunes
podcast play list, alternatively, you can
download past podcasts by just clicking the
Get button. You can listen to your podcasts
on your computer with iTunes, or synchronize
them with your
iPod or any
other
MP3 player,
and listen on the go.
If you want to start video podcasting you will
only need to incorporate the corresponding
visuals to their audio script and use a video
camera to record it instead of an audio
recording device, to start making your own
video
podcasts.
Video
podcasting is made even easier, as this type of
broadcasting does not involve any particular
software for distributing it over the internet,
nor does it have technical limitations as to the
format of video encoding. There are resources
available online for a low price or for free.
These resources have made the making of
video
podcasts really simple. Anyone who is looking to
promote his own business or simply wants make
his own face familiar to thousands of people
through podcasting, will only need a digital
camcorder or a small web camera, to record the
video, plus
some free downloadable software for recording
and editing the actual video. There are free
video and audio editing software available to
download from the internet. Also you will need
free video codec’s for encoding and compressing
the final video, and free software for
generating the necessary RSS files.
So good
luck, and get started. |
